Respected recipient,
in light of troubling issues regarding economic (and social) inequalities, I have an inquiry about product labeling. Is there a plan to include a piece of data such as a “transparency index”? I would define it as a ratio between a selling price (SP) or retail price (RP) and a cost price (CP). I think it would be an important piece of information for us to know how we contribute to economic situation directly through buying different products. And we would be able to choose the more socially or economically responsible suppliers. Buying product is giving money, and giving money is giving a certain chunk of power – it matters what this firm does (or intends to do) with this power.
The transparency indext as defined above, would mean disclosing a price margin, which is considered a trade secret. But taking into account the facts of our current economic situation, how inequality has risen and how corporate world on its own lacks a sense of corporate social responsibility, I believe this secretive nature or privilege of secrecy should be considered to be taken away. Simply put, firms hold too big an influence on how we live and should behave much more as important social institutions (as regarded by a branch of institutional economics).
I reckon this could be considered to be a part of your Digital Product Passport (abbreviated DPP). A part of most essential set of information we ought to know about products we buy. I believe transparency index will tell us a lot about how the given supplier will influence a state of economic inequalities. I presume there are always issues in implementing such ideas, but in issues of such magnified importance I believe those should hold a secondary role and just be something that needs to be tackled and overcome.
I beleive transparency index would or could be an example of a firm step into tackling economic inequality issue. Is there any plan to include it into an acknowledged set of information that mark products on our product shelfs?
Kind regards, Project Paradim
